Topic: Dud game

There are more, but these are the basics. With these in mind, here are the basic damage types that are currently in NS2 (in development, not final):

    * Normal - Regular damage (Rifle, Bite)
    * Puncture - Extra damage vs. armor (Fade swipe, Pistol, Shotgun)
    * Piercing - Increased vs. players (Minigun, Lerk spikes)
    * Light - Half vs. armor (Sentries, Hydras)
    * Structural - Double against structures (Onos gore, SwitchAxe, Rifle grenades)
    * Gas - Breathing targets only (Spores, Rifle nerve gas grenades)
    * Biological - Living/organic targets only (Parasite, Flamethrower)
    * StructuresOnly - Doesn't damage players or AI units (MASC, Whip Bombard)

Here are some beneficial effects of these simple types:

   1. Basic marines and skulks are versatile.
   2. Shotguns won't absolutely waste skulks but are especially good at more advanced lifeforms and armored structures (Crags).
   3. Lerks aren't especially effective at taking out structures from a distance (something that was a problem in old versions of NS1).
   4. Marines can take down alien structures relatively quickly when they aren't defended (ie, when they have taken down defenders and pull out their axes).

shotguns doing extra damage AGAINST armour? yeah that makes sense...

edit: oh yeah and apparently that gay close combat oc is also an alien siege turret?

Yeah, shotguns doing extra against oni seems weird.

Flamethrower only damages organic targets!? Guess you can't use it against... marine structures? Is this implying friendly fire!?!?!? Or you know, could just be not too well thought out.
If it is friendly fire then perhaps heavies are non-organic and immune.

But yeah, I'm not convinced the majority of those damage types are necessary and also worried that they've made the game so simple they're necessary to add depth.

In RTS games the most tactical unit interactions are those that don't involve rock-paper-scissors. The whole rock-paper-scissors interaction is just a method of easy balancing.

I think you missed his point entirely.

But i do think it implies friendly fire. So if a skulk is close range in a group of marines, a flamethrower won't be as easy as fire+forward. I really wonder how the game will play, when early game life forms, are still useful in the end. Probably will encourage more than an entire team of hmg late game.

Possibly with weapon/armour upgrades and unlocked abilities from more hives? Exactly how it was in NS?

I'd imagine they would tweak the shotgun in NS2 so that it's not awesome against skulks, and then even more powerful against higher-tier aliens (which no doubt would be the case if they directly important the NS1 shotgun's stats). Say for instance the damage done by a single shotgun shell in NS1 is 1. More than likely an NS2 shotgun shell will deal 0.7 damage (compared to the NS1 shotgun) against non-armoured targets such as the skulk, and 1.3 damage to armoured targets.

but that makes no sense.... the shirtgun shoots pellets not slugs.... and either way it would be less effective.
